We live in a very fickle world these days. If you ask the ordinary youth these days – what they would do for fame, it’s quite alarming. Just hang out in L.A. a bit and you might even get more shocked. Maybe, it’s the glamour – the image of being important that attracts them. But, then you see the handful examples of the true legends our society creates…you tend to second-guess if that’s life you really want to live.
Take for example, Michael Jackson, a true musical legend by any degree. A guy – whose music resonates through many generations and will be remembered for many more. If you asked anyone including the media what they thought of him last week – the words they would use would be “weird, bizarre, etc.” And they would bring up the scandals, the negatives (true or not)…but that’s what society thought defined him.
Now, unfortunately, he passes away – and the entire world finally gives this person the respect for his talent. I just find it awkward that it takes society a persons death to finally recognize the positives one brings. I can also see how being in these surroundings the definition of “real” could easily fade.
It’s amazing that when you do live this life – whether you’re guilty or not of an allegation – you’ve already forever tainted your image. Doesn’t look all that glamorous of a life to me.
The loss of this legend – gives all of us a true awakening that we should appreciate life and never take it for granted. And, may also shed us light on how being a “superstar” maybe a pretty lonely place up top.

So true. We only have this one life to live – one must not waste any moment and truly live life to the fullest.
And yes, actions do speak louder than words. One can work hard all their life, but no matter what they accomplish – they will be known and remembered for their character.

I read your thoughts about Michael. I never took anything by granted.I always thout that we,people, live in some kind of dizziness. And the moment we wake up is the most painfull of all. Why? Because is not enough to live, you have to be alive. I am alive for all my my. It’s hurts. I scream,I cry, I laugh, I suffer……….but I’m alive. Michael is not my idol.I recognize his value, but i’m not one of the “screaming funs” from it’s concerts. But, since I descover him, I aprrecieted the power of trying to break the other’s wall from their hearts. Maybe I could never do that, but he at least tried to do something that only a few of us are able to do. And for that I give him all the “remember” and the respect he deserve.

MJ changed the music industry…let along pop culture forever! Unfortunately the public does not realize the magnitude of this loss…The unproven accusations and tarnishes to his reputation over the last decade have emotionally detached the public from connecting to him as everyone’s hero or idol…He has impacted musicians and performers around the world for years to come…and I agree with you G…people will wish they had that chance again…just one more time…
As James Dean once said, “Dream as if you’ll live forever…live as if you’ll die today.”
Sometimes you only get one chance…don’t be left hanging…
Thank you Michael…you are the greatest!

Great post, G.
It is important to recognize what makes our lives worth living, everyday.
Those we love and the varying passions that drive our lives in one direction or another.
For Michael Jackson, his passion became a gift of music for generations to enjoy…and hopefully his legacy will be his music and not the more dysfunctional aspects of his life — mostly caused due to being a superstar, the King of Pop.
Michael

I completely agree with every word you said.

Very deep and profound. But on the other hand, ask yourself this question, doesn’t everyone die? And ifyou know you’re going to die, why not ask yourself how you would like to be remembered as? I do not want to live a life which does not positively affect other people’s lives, and the more powerful you are (whether by riches, authority, position, fame) the more you can positively affect other people’s lives. Fame, power, riches bring about quite a “heady” experience, and there is no self-help book on how to handle sudden riches or fame.
So it is not wise to despise fame in itself; it is rather the mishandling of fame and power, and lack of the understanding of the responsibility that comes with being famous that ultimately brings about a famous person’s downfall.

“Now, unfortunately, he passes away – and the entire world finally gives this person the respect for his talent. I just find it awkward that it takes society a persons death to finalize recognize the positives one brings. ”
Wow I couldn’t of said it better myself. I’ve only ever cried over the death of a celebrity once, with Princess Diana, until now. I’ve always respected Michael for his work and incredible talent and my heart aches for the world who, like i do, feel like they’ve just lost a major piece of their life. He created to soundtrack to so many peoples existence.
It is so true that that kind of lifestyle is such a double-edged sward and it is so tragic that this is how his legend came to an end. I sincerely DO hope, that people strive to remember him for the greatest he gave, from his music and influential dance moves, to his efforts with Children’s Charities that effected so many people with the millions that he both gave, and helped to raise. Rest In Peace, Michael. You will be missed and remembered for centuries.

I wonder how his new move was that would make the moonwalk look like nothing. Read more here about it: http://en.slowradio.com/music_news/330/michael_jackson/jackson_working_on_a_new_dance_move
About the “G”’s message, I think that death is a friend. It makes us appreciate life. Every second of it.

Sad…this is how humans are, as to take life for granted is the new fashion, but for centuries. As far as Michael, when he was alive, majority of the media was his worse enemy. Now that he is gone, he is being given the attention he so deserved when he was ALIVE. All those people who bad-mouthed him should be ashamed of themselves.

I don’t know a single person who took Michael Jackson’s death harder then I did. I have never known a person who supported and trusted him as much as I have. Not that I thought he is some God who would live forever, but never thought it would happen when it did…out of no where, while i was running on the tred at then gym, causing me to faint as it came on the T.V. in front of me and fly off the machine. And yes I felt the pain after waking up…. But I find something in common with men who acquire wealth and power from humble beginnings. Once you reach a certain status, it doesn’t take long before the people stop patting you on the back and start stabbing it instead. Michael Jackson is not the only person I know for this to happen to. My father, like Gurbuksh, started from nothing and gained a net worth well over $100mil. and has fought every step of the way to keep it. From bad press to law suits, paying around two million just in lawyer fees within the past few years. I hope this doesnt happen to you Gurbuksh but wouldn’t surprise me if it does. All I can say is be VERY careful and always be the best moral person you can be. Because at the end of it all, even if everyone turns against you, at least you and Waheed Guru will know that you tried to be a good person. Good luck yaar!

So true Gurbaksh, but this is just how our society operates! The world is a sad sad place, people take too much for granted and dont know the true worth of things until they are gone. MJ passes and now all of a sudden everyone loves him and people are showing respect for him.. Its sad, just reallly sad! I just pray that his family will get through this hard time..
June 29th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
I disagree, I believe Michael Jackson was recognized for all of his musical achievements early on in his career. Most people for some reason do not like to speak ill of somebody who just died. I for one am not that person and will not miss him one bit.

Well, If you know who you are, deep down and within.. thats all that matters for one to have a good life.. why do we need to care about what other people or society thinks. They change their thoughts, mind, perception everyday.. you cant change them,we cant change them..we can only change ourselves, to be lesser concerned individuals and focus on becoming better humans and treating people respectfully.

D VERY IDEA OF IT IS JUS A DISGRACE!
NO MONKEY HAS EVER DESERTED HIS WIFE,

This commentary about Michael Jackson is ludicrous and makes me want to scream. At what point did we start to idolize musicians and actors – who are simply real people such as ourselves and leave behind our true everyday heroes. Our police, firefighters, soldiers and teachers – those are the people our children should idolize and when they make mistakes as Michael did, they to are in the news, but we forgive them and go on with our lives – we don’t harp on it endlessly as people do with celebrities. Let’s try and get our values straight and honor those that do good for our country every single day – not simply once in a while.

Hi, i just want to say that I can’t believe you’re so down to earth!
Are you a jatt – sikh? or are you not into castes that much?
August 2nd, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Soo true! MJ was innocent and found NOT guilty by a jury or ordinary people like you and me – people aren’t stupid .. if they’re on jury duty and there’s a clear pedophile sitting a few yards away from them, they’re not going to let him walk out of the court-room innocent no matter who he or she is.
It’s so sad that it took him to die for some people to give him the respect which he deserved and what’s worse is that there are still people who take the mic out of him. The world can be so cruel and judgemental at times…
RIP Micheal Jackson – The King of Music.

I’ve traveled the world. I was only friendly and full of love towards everyone I met.
You know what I discovered. 99% of people I meet are assholes if you are a stranger. Reality of life is that, people in this day and age are mean and don’t usually give each other the benefit of the doubt.
p.s. Toronto and Stockholm are the worst cities in the world that I have seen. There is just no romance in these two cities.
