Yesterday, I had the privilege of meeting the most powerful woman in the world, Oprah Winfrey. One of my dreams has always been to meet her and if I got the chance appear on her show. Yesterday – both happened. The show’s theme was “Young Moguls.” Her first guests were Mary-Kate & Ashley Olson and I was her second guest. During my segment, I discussed with her my childhood, core values, and upcoming projects including the book and Secret Millionaire.
If you get the chance – make sure to watch or TIVO the episode. It’s tentatively supposed to air next Thursday, October 23rd 2008. Surprisingly – that day is also special for another reason. My book, The Dream, was fast-tracked and will be released early. It should be in bookstores and ship out from Amazon.com on October 23rd (next week). If any of you read the book – I hope it inspires you to never stop dreaming and to always shoot for the stars.

i wonder how you kept control of your first company idea. didn’t people try to steal it since you were a kid?
how did you legally protect your idea, so that you could sell it for $40m ?

It was very interesting seeing you on Oprah. You come across as being so incredibly humble discussing your life and your passions. It is so great to see someone with your background and culture mix so well in the crazy world we are in today. So amazing to know that another person out there has followed their dreams and did not allow another to steer them off and pick the shorter fork in the road. Congrats on your many continued successes in life,
Sincerely, Nadia

I just saw your interview with Oprah and let me tell you that it is just an inspiration for me and many people out there. You were not only there to speak about your core values and strengths but also you brought your family who has been there for you all this time. That says a lot from somebody. Congratulations! I wish all the best. Looking forward to reading your book.

Dear Gurbaksh…
Please excuse me if I have not approached this topic appropriately. We need help…We do not know anything regarding the correct direction to help our sweet Rashmi, our Lit’l Sunshine girl. We are semi-retired and have our own comapany in the US but do not know much regarding International laws. In any case, my question to you is more for advice as an Indian man who has lived in the states with a devoted Indian family as support, that would help our Indian friend in which we and her family have considered our god-daughter, for three years. She will soon be visiting us in FL for the very first time; we’ve not seen her since she was 21 and we very much want to help her reach her own dreams here in the USA. She is an extremely beautiful, intelligent, and very honest 24 year old young lady who has ALWAYS placed her family first in her life; a difficult one but has always remained loyal to her family and her culture; always with a radiant smile that melts ones heart. She has worked extremely hard since the age of 14 (at least from our own standards of hard work) and continues to do so today. She will arrive here in VB before Thanksgiving and we will try to pursue any direction to help her achieve those dreams she has for herself and her family in India. Any direction from your perceptive that may help us to guide her would be most welcomed for us to consider in an effort to help her accomplish her life’s goals.

Something told me to watch Oprah! It brings a strong sense of hope and determination more than ever into my life. All of the segments were great, but yours stood out to me the most because I am able to relate to you more than any of the others. Watching you talk about your family and a dream,(congratulations on your book btw), which you choose to “run” into is inspiring to many like myself. Your rise into success is empowering and motivates me to want to become an entrepreneur. My life has been a rollercoaster much like the last 10 years of yours. My family has and at times still does have to choose between wants and needs. I feel as though my life has derailed to help me see what I have missed and continue to miss. I have always wanted to create a life for myself and help ensure my family’s stability. If you could take a few moments out of your busy life to respond and maybe help me out with tips or ideas on how to get started, I would be forever grateful. Run, Gurbaksh, Run! =)

Hi,
I heard your story today on the Oprah Show & it was very impressive! To have accomplished so much at such a young age is incredible. I give you a lot of credit to take matters into your own hands the way you did which changed your life. I am equally impressed that you have remained close with your family. I have high family values & too often I see people throwing that away. You seem very happy with your life. I was very inspired by your interview with Oprah … and you are very attractive. Keep it up …. you deserve all your good fortune!
October 23rd, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Congratulations Gurbaksh. Not only for appearing on the Oprah Show and the release of your new book, but also for raising the head of us Punjabi’s. I watch the Oprah Show everyday and was very proud to see you represent yourself the way you did. And by the way, I’m 22 years old and single, call me

I don`t really have much to say, except that I felt a sense of pride and happiness to see a Sikh person make it and appear on the Oprah show like you did today. Good luck in all your future endeavours.
October 23rd, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Like many others on this site commenting, I, too, watched the segment which aired on Oprah. Taking a look through the blogs, I can completely relate to many comments G has cited such as the “Laws of Attraction” and also Dr. Pausch’s heartfelt and raw analysis of life. I just wanted to post up that I was very proud today that a fellow Chahal has become successful and still maintained true to his familial roots because, afterall, those are the only people who will be there for you unconditionally. Cheers.

Well I don’t have $300 let alone $300 million, but I nevertheless received a lesson in humility today. I’m glad you were able to use the Oprah show as a platform to share your story.
October 23rd, 2008 at 6:53 pm
I watched you closely on Oprah this morning.
I was moved by your real story who came from a humble beginning and turn his life aroundby pursuing the American Dream. As we hear negative news about the bleak outlook of our economy, home foreclosure, and layoffs, you gave people hope that anyone can do it if they have a passion and courage to overcome the fear. You have a vision about what to invests and went for it. I wish that I have a strong passion and commitment like you. God Bless
October 23rd, 2008 at 7:25 pm
You made the sikhs proud and i was glad to see that on Oprah today.
October 23rd, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Hi, I watched Oprah with my 8 year old son today. He was amazed from your story. You have inspired him so much with all of your success. He said he wants to be just like you:) He is always thinking of a new invention. Also wants to write a kids book also into a movie. He has a wonderful mind of always looking to do something but does not know how to get started. Can you give us some input?
CONGRATULATIONS with all your success!

Wow! What an inspirational story.
People are surrounded by simple, obvious solutions that can dramatically increase their income, power, influence and success. The problem is that they don’t see them.
Although i was born in Pakistan, i was raised as a true Texan since the age of 4. I followed my dream and opened my own business, a spa and salon called “Glow” in Dallas (www.liveloveglow.com) Would love to even have 15 minutes to sit down for a cup of coffee with you and pick your brain….

I rarely watch the Oprah show anymore because I am usually at work. Today I was home sick with the flu and for lack of anything else to do while laying in bed with a massive fever, decided to turn on the tv. Low and behold there you were. I was mesmerized. And, in all honesty, I’ve NEVER reached out to anyone I saw on tv. But, I was absolutely amazed, impressed, call it what you may, by your sincerity, your genuine smile, your family values, your humble ways, your intelligence (not to mention your drive and good looks…I’m shocked you are single, I think Oprah was too!). From what I can tell (granted it was just on tv, but I consider myself to be a really good judge of character…), you deserve every bit of success! I admire the fact that you placed your family first when you became financially successful. I hope to one day be able to offer my parents, brother, and his family the same. People say I have a heart of gold and I’d like to use that heart to help others, especially children, in a way they haven’t been helped prior. I am working on getting my business idea ramped up but it’s just at the beginning stages of conception.
I know not that you will ever actually read this; I’m certain it passes many eyes before reaching yours, but either way something inspired me to write to you. Now it’s time for bed again as this took just about all my energy for the day (remember, I have the flu…so apologies if this message is a bit “blurry”).
Much love and gratitude,
Kristen

Hi G, I was wondering if you have any upcoming presentations in Boston. I am interested to hear more!
Regards.

Following your dreams sometimes can be very difficult. I have a secure job that pays the bills, but it is by far my dream job.
After watching your interview today it has fueled me to pursue my real talent of art and with the support of my wife and daughter I am going to push myself to live my dream.
I thank you for your will and determination and what you have achieved in your life. It forces people such as myself to strive and remain positive through the tough times and follow their hearts with no other motive than happiness. Thank you my friend, you have truly inspired me.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:40 pm
Gurbaksh, I don’t usually “do the blogs thing,” but it was so incredible to see someone speak about their life success without having to boast. I admire you as a young mogul with a lot of values and strengths. Your humbleness makes you stand out in my mind. …It’s true what they say, “Money can’t buy you happiness”. I really would like to say, if everyone had the same outlook as you, we could live in a better world! I have so much respect for you. I wish you all the best, Crystal

I saw the promo for “Oprah” and TiVo’d it, and here I am at 2 o’clock in the morning watching the episode. You are a credit to your family, to Sikhs, and to Indians everywhere.
Two things struck me about your interview, and no, they weren’t your fancy cars and the fantastic view from your house. One was the fact that you give props to your family, who remain close to you and give you support, and never fail to keep your ego in check. The second thing was, even though Oprah gave you every opportunity to do so (”living well is the best revenge, what do you have to say now to the kids who gave you a hard time in school?”) you refused to take the bait and humbly said “Being on ‘Oprah’ is enough!” Humble in your success; that IS enough.
Congratulations, and I wish for your continued success!
October 24th, 2008 at 12:29 am
Congrats!
You were quite an inspiration to all of us! There needs to be more people like you in the world. Stay humble.

Hi Gurbaksh,
You made me cry when you narrated to Oprah your success story…especially about your early years of struggle and eventually when you followed your passion. Most of all, the balance in all aspects to find the true destiny and inner happines. Whew, you inspired me a lot. You are now eatched in my heart! I will always remember you…so I could gain more strenght and personal innovation.
Goodluck to your reality TV show on Fox 11. Im happy for you. You have what it takes to be an ICON! I’ve never been wrong in eyeing potentials…you’re like a needle in a haystack! Congratulations!
Take care always and have fun while living your dream…while I’l take your advise to follow the dream of yours…
Hope to have a copy of your book and to see you in person. That would be my “aha moment”. Yes!!! Thanks.

Hi Gurbaksh,
You are a true hero to have accomplished your dreams at such and early age by overcoming the cruelty of peers. As a child I always came home crying because kids teased me about the big scar I have on my face as a result of a car accident. I wish you had been a part of my life back then. Unfortunately, I am more than twice your age. If you ever visit Southeastern New Mexico, we would be honored to have you over for dinner . My congratulations to your parents. You are beautiful on the inside and absolutely gorgeous on the outside.
October 24th, 2008 at 10:50 am
Congrats. I saw the show. I had just come back froma 6 week global adventure to meet with the local heroes of the world in the most impoverished nations.
I’m the Founder of SAWA. We empower the unknown heroes in the poorest countries to have a voice. It has been my dream since I was 8 and I left my engineering job to do this full time.
I emailed you at your web address to seek partnership with you.
Best wishes

Dear Gurbaksh,
Because of Oprah I have seen who you are, and have been browsing all morning about you here at work, having seen yesterday’s episode, which impacted me to the extent that I am writing here, now, to you. First I would like to reach out and say that I admire you very much for who you are and your values, for your way of thinking. You are truly an inspiration to me, not because of becoming a millionaire, although it goes to show that things in this life are indeed blessings, but that through this experience you have opened yourself up to share with others your journey, which to me, is more fulfilling, in the sense that when you give of yourself, you receive so much more. I read your birthday blog (Happy belated birthday!!!) I could sense an openness and innerpeace in your writings, and look forward to reading your blogs. For the age in which we live in is hard finding and meeting people with this kind of thinking, (hey speaking for myself) which is where my admiration comes from, for the way you seem to be, (I could be wrong, you never know..!! lol) but…because for me I do not normally come across people this type, although I try to surround myself with positive people, who we could look up to. I’m a person who is considered a role model in my community and I live a fulfilling life; not because others admire me, but because my fulfillment comes from helping people find themselves. You know, talking to people, sharing my own experiences, helping those who really want to better themselves, etc. and because I’ve been there…(although most situations differ.) But there are moments in which I have no one to look up to, and that is where you come in.
October 24th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Gurbaksh ji,
We saw you on Oprah yesterday. My son is 5 years of age and I just want you to know, YOU are his HERO. He wants to be like YOU when he grows up. Of course, I have no problem with that
, as I will be just as proud of a parent to him, as your family has been of your success. To see your father in the audience, I can only imagine the happiness he must feel today. You make me feel proud as a Sikh, as a Punjabi, and above all give me hope my family too can live to see ‘the dream’.
Many best wishes to you on the release of the book and your new show. We can’t wait to see it.
October 24th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Congratulations on all of your success. I think you are the first Punjabi person to be featured on the Oprah show. Thank you for representing us well.
Living in area highly populated with East Indians, I did not face the same challenges that you did growing up while wearing a turban. I look forward to reading your book for more details on how being a victim of hate and having ambition fuelled your success.
Best wishes to you and your family in the future.

I watched you on the Oprah show and it was very inspiring to hear your story. I migrated here from New Zealand 8yrs ago and currently pursuing my own dreams in Sacramento. You are a great example to many of us of the importance to keep striving. I also believe in giving back to the community and work closely in encouraging Polynesian Youth to pursue higher education to achieve their dreams. We have many who are talented outside of the traditional education system who can certainly follow your footsteps to know it can definitely happen for them.

Hello Gurbaksh,
My name is Erica, 23 years old, and I did TIVO your episode of Oprah. You probably have heard this a trillion times that you are extremely charming and you are.
I was very excited to see that I am not the only person who is determined to control their own life. It has just happened that this past week I did sell one of my businesses for my first few millions in NYC and let me tell you that there is no other greater feeling then knowing that what you have created, other people are out there are eager to get their hands on it. So, now that I no longer have the restaurant I am at a crossroads in my life. I do not wish to get back into the restaurant business- I am very eager to start something completely new but no ideas have came to mind yet. If you have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.
And just so you know I am going to buy your book today!!! Before I go I just would like to add that I find it extremely hysterical how some of the comments posted here are parents trying to pimp their daughters to you!!!
I know you enjoy the attention- who wouldn’t!
P.S. Keep on blogging!
Sincerely,
Erica Krysta

Gurbaksh,
I happened to catch your segment on Oprah, and I am sure you have had a slew of responses. I found you to come across very humble, bright, and inspirational. I can imagine how brutal children can be…I’ve been there and experienced growing up being perceived as “different”. It’s painful. Now you have succeeded in ways beyond their wildest dreams. I don’t know where you live, but I’d love to meet you…I’m sure you hear that often enough!
