The Amazon Kindle has the same traits as the Apple iPod did. It’s a device that becomes a platform for content. Publishers are slow to move on it but should welcome this – rather than drag their feet much like the music industry did. It took a technology innovator like Apple to revolutionize the music industry. Amazon, The Kindle, has the ability to do the same for content.
The easier you can allow a consumer to consume content – it will result into higher consumption – which will generate higher revenues for the industry and content owner. So, everyone still gets a piece of the pie. And eventually that pie gets bigger.
An added benefit for the kindle, it’s better for the environment. It helps transition us to a more paperless society. And not to forget, for the struggling publications/newspapers that are trying to cut costs to survive in today’s digital society – it gives them access to distribution.
Think 10 years ahead – wouldn’t ever every student and environmentalist be happy to see that we don’t need to print millions of copies of textbooks and carry them around.
It’ll give a whole new meaning to a back pack…
Here’s more on the interview I did today with Neil Cavuto on the Kindle.

Kindle is great for a reader without the clutter of books. Good job on the interview.

So happy to see you blogged after almost a month. You must have been very busy. Wish and hope every body is fine in your family.
G, thanks for pointing out this innovative device. This will surely revolutionlize how we interact with print media in very near future. Paperless society would be so good for environment.
It’ll give a whole new meaning to a back pack… ( this would make my daughter Jasleen happy who is in 4th grade and her back pack is so heavy with lot of books )
Best of luck with your new venture gwallet.

Kindle sounds very innovative, and coming from a fellow environmentalist it’s great that there is something that will reduce the need for printed material. What’s even better is that I can now have novels available in the palm of my hand as opposed to a bulky book in my bag….great stuff I must say!

Great discussion. I agree with you on a couple points, mainly with the direction of digital content. I think kindle has a good solid business model but I do not think this should even be in the same sentence as the iphone, maybe an ipod.
Still you need to look at the fact that kindle has a single function. The iphone is a revolutionary platform that serves as mulit function product. Society is looking for something that provides numerous functions. The barriers to entry are low because eventually people will be able to get the same content on computers, buying books digital.
We’ll see what happens. Good post.

Come on, the kindle is all bells and whistles, its not going to go anywhere. I can get the same news, books, music on a netbook or an ipod touch or an iphone or a blackberry. The trick is in coming up with one gadget that does everything really well not individual gadgets that do one thing. Oh yeah and marketing helps.
